Stjerneklang

Norwegian folk tunes and vocal improvisation in a breathtaking and dynamic crossover with Bach's organ chorales for Christmas

Sinikka Langeland
folk song
Andreas Liebig
on the historic Wagner-organ (1741) in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondhjem (Norway)

Sinikka Langeland (www.sinikka.no) and Andreas Liebig recorded the Christmas concert Stjerneklang at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim - one of the most important pilgrimage goals in Europe since the Middelages. Also the old Christmas hymns like e.g. Puer natus, In dulci jubilo and Vom Himmel hoch have migrated throughout Europe for over a thousand years and become a part of Norwegian folk tradition.

In this program that received outstanding reviews Sinikka Langeland sings variations on Norwegian folk melodies that are based on the same melodies used by J. S. Bach as a source of his Christmas chorales. Andreas Liebig plays the Cathedral's magnificent Wagner organ, built in 1741. This is the first time that Christmas chorales from Orgelbüchlein, Leipziger Choräle and Canonic variations have been recorded in their entirety on this masterpiece of Baroque organ artistry.

Stjerneklang invites the listener to accompany the musicians on a musical journey to the Star of Bethlehem, where the distance between St. Thomas's Church and the Norwegian stave church is shorter than one may think…
