The Historic Organ of the Parish and Convent Church at Oelinghausen
Historical Overview
1390: First documented reference to an organ at Oelinghausen. Formal opening of the swallow's nest organ on the occasion of the festival in honour of St. Lucy. This organ was situated above the chapel of the Cross.
1492: At this time, there must have been two organs, for one document refers to a place boven by unsen groeten orgelen (above near our big organ) (accordingly, there must have been a large and a smaller organ).
1555: The OCTAVA 4´ stop (completely preserved) is built by Johannes Sundag (?).
1586: The SpitzFlaute 2´ , OCTAV 2´ and Principal 4´ stops are added by an unknown organ builder. On February 2, at Candlemas, the organs in the convent church are destroyed by Martin Schenk's troops.
1599: Martin de Mare builds a new organ in the same place it is still found today. He uses the material from the previous organs not destroyed in 1586. The new stops he builds, namely PRÆSTANT 8´ , MIXTUR 4-fach , BARDUN 16´ and DUESFLÖT 4´ are ad ded on slider chests.
1713: Johan - Berenhard Klausing begins his work of restoration and extension: the slider chest of the great organ is replaced with a spring chest. The CIMBAL 3-Chor , Flaute Duse 4´ , RohrFlaute 8´ and GEDACT 8´ stops are re-built; and the SexquiAltera 3-fach is made from new pipe material (octave and third) as well as from the 2? ´ Quinte built by Martin de Mare. Furthermore, the organ is equipped with three diagonal bellows.
1717: Johan Berenhard Klausing's work of restoration and extension is concluded. The organ receives the front sti ll in existence today.
1844: The organ is equipped with a reservoir , added by organ builders Ahmer of Soest. The old diagonal bellows added by Klausing are shut down, one is removed.
1867: Adam Discher from Hirschberg adds another stop to the organ, Posaune 16´ from another, unknown organ. In the great organ, the spring chest added by Klausing is rebuilt as a slider chest. The console is removed to the left hand side of the organ case.
1935 In case of a power failure, the two remaining diagonal bellows Klausing added to the organ are still being used.
1963: Restoration and renovation executed by the company of Breil from Dorsten. The organ is equipped with an independent pedal. In order to make room for this pedal in the case , some space is cleared in the bellows casing: the two remaining diagonal bellows are removed and some parts of the oak beams that support and carry the structure are cut out and replaced by steel profiles. The new pedal stops are Subbaß 16´ , Gedacktbass 8´ , Nachthorn 2´ , Mixtur (5-fach) and Schalmei 4´ . A new wind supply mechanism is added. The Hauptwerk wind chest (originally Klausing's spring chest) restructured in 1867 is replaced by a new mechanism and remains missing since then. The Holzregal 8´ stop is added, and the Prinzipal 4´ stop removed to the pedal. The console is returned to its original location underneath the smaller pipes in the middle of the front.
1987: During a thorough cleaning of the pipes, it is possible for the first time to establish an exact documentation of the historical layers of construction and the pipes added. More than 3,000 music signatures are catalogued.
1985 - 1989: The Vox Humana 8´ (1985) and Posaune 16´ (1986) stops are rebuilt by organ builder Hans Peter Mebold from Siegen. The Regal 8´ and Trompete 8´ stops are modified or reconstructed according to scales based on Christian Klausing, Ochtersum.
2000 - 2002: The historic organ is restored by organ builders Kuhn from Männedorf (Switzerland). The objective is to return the organ to its state of 1714/17 as Johan
Berenhard Klausing built it.
